Part 8: Getting your social game on


Social media, once unrelated to getting good rankings, is now a factor that search engines take into consideration when ranking your site for keywords. And it’s a trend that’s growing. Search engines are looking more and more at social media activity to determine where sites should rank. There are plenty or reasons why a business should engage in social media as part of an online strategy. Social media assists in building valuable relationships, increases brand awareness, allow you to  better understand your customers and extends your influence. It is also effective for SEO. Here’s how…


Just being active will benefit your rankings

Setting up social platforms, ensuring they link to your site, and being active on them helps your SEO. Google looks at the activity of your social media and factors it in when calculating rankings. Most particularly, it will look at the number of likes, comments and shares of your posts and will reward you the more these engagement signals exist on your business’ social media.


To do this well, you need to know your audience and speak to them with posts that they will find interesting or valuable.

Supplying an audience with things beneficial that they are wanting is a good way to improve on engagement signals (likes, comments, shares) and thereby improve rankings.



Promote your stuff 

Social media is also great for promotion. It gets your stuff out there and gets it seen. If you’ve written a great article that is on your site or have created a video that you’ve put on your business’ Youtube channel, putting it up on social media is a great way to make people aware of it. And if it’s really good, people may like or share it through social media or link to it from their website. If it’s extraordinary, it may even go viral. This kind of publicity is great for your business, but its also great for your rankings. As more people share and link to your content, it improves rankings and also allows more people then to see your content!


So which social media platforms should I use?   

There is an abundance of social media out there to get your head and fingers into. And expect there to be more that emerge in the next few years. The ones most commonly used are the ones we recommend a business start with. These include:







You may not have the time and resources to be active on each of these platforms perpetually, and you do not need to be on all of them. However, the more social platforms you’re active and effective on, the better it will be for your keyword rankings.


My recommendation is to know your audience and understand what is the best social media platform where you will find them and engage them to maximise likes, comments and shares of all the stuff you put up. If your target market is other businesses, this may very well be LinkedIn or Google+, alternatively, if your target market are individual consumers, then Facebook and Twitter will likely be the best online social avenues to meet and successfully engage with your audience.


That brings us to the end of our series on DIY SEO. We recognise that doing SEO yourself is not easy, especially if you have an ill disposition for anything technical. It’s also an investment, where a lot of work is required until results eventually become visible. However, we can attest from our experience that if you stick at it, do things the right way and not take questionable shortcuts, and if you continually learn as you go and are prepared to put in the hard work, you’ll get there!
