An Introduction to SEO

How Search Engine Optimise your website
Part 1: An Introduction to SEO

Strong rankings in search engines like Google are imperative in today’s day and age to be a thriving online business. I have witnessed businesses grow threefold by getting the right keywords that target the right people, and having those keywords ranked at the top of Google. To achieve this effectively, one often needs to engage a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) agency to perform all the work required to get rankings to top positions. A SEO agency will be able to thoroughly do the work required and a particularly good SEO will enable a business to stay ahead of the game, adapt to the changing online landscape and most effectively generate work that promotes a business online. However, not every startup, small business or social enterprise can afford a good SEO that will usually charge on a monthly basis. So how then can a small business who a limited budget attain good rankings? And is there a guide which can explain it super simply for the common folk to understand?

Well the good news is that this guide we’ve put together at Sprout online is just for you!

The steps prescribed in the How to Do SEO Series that runs over several posts will give you an understanding of what you can do to improve the performance of your site to attain better rankings. It is important to note that this is no walk in the park, good search engine optimisation involves time and tedious work. Additionally, a DIY job will not replace hiring an expert SEO agency that will likely have the resources, experience and specialisation to perform tasks to a higher level and attain better, more sustainable results. However, following the steps in this guide will give you a basis to get your website off the ground and provide the foundations for strong rankings to be attained.

Before launching into the steps to implement to get ranking results, its important to have some understanding of what is SEO. For this we would recommended The Beginner’s Guide to SEO by Moz.

It’s also important to just have a basic understanding of what we mean when we talk about getting top rankings. Whereabouts are these rankings exactly going to be located?

google adwords places

Google is divided into three main sections. The top section (in red) and on the side (also in red) are Google Ads. To be positioned in these places, one will need to pay Google.  A charge is applied for every time an ad of yours is clicked. This form or online advertising is known as Pay-per-click (PPC). There is an art of good PPC or Adwords management, however this is the topic of another discussion and won’t be covered in this series.

google local pack position

When a search is made with a location included (e.g tax accountant Melbourne), a box with local listings will often appear (as seen below in blue). This section is known as Google Local Listings or Google Places. The section lists the businesses relating to the service industry and particularly the locality that has been searched. A search made for “tax accountant Melbourne” will render a listing in this section of tax accountants in or around the geographical area of Melbourne. Google Listing optimisation will be addressed in this series when covering how to effectively perform local SEO.

google organic listing position

The final and third section we find in Google is the section that is the crux of SEO.  The main section (in green) is what is known as the organic listings or organic results. These are the results that appear without having to pay Google for advertising and that appear irrespective of location within a country. For many of us, these organic listings are the reason we use Google. They are the results Google provides, which Google thinks best responds to our search query. Getting higher results for suitable keyword queries a one’s target market is entering into Google will enable them to attain more traffic that is of better quality and that most likely leads to a call, enquiry or purchase.

This series of articles is devoted to getting good rankings in the organic listings and also for that matter in the Google Local Listings. It is a step-by-step prescriptive guide to help small businesses get off the ground and get ready to take full flight.
